NASA's 'Moonikin' mannequin boards Orion spacecraft for Artemis 1 moon mission



On NASA's brand-new Space Launch System megarocket, Commander Moonikin Campos will go to the moon aboard Orion.

The Orion spacecraft, which will go to the moon atop a brand-new megarocket, has now been equipped with the data-gathering mannequin Commander Moonikin Campos by NASA.

Campos has been successfully fitted into the Orion Capsule, which is atop the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket for the Artemis 1 trip around the moon, according to a tweet from NASA's Exploration Ground Systems team on July 27. The date of liftoff is presently set for August 29.

Moonkin Campos is a human-sized test dummy that is now fastened onto the commander's chair at the front of the capsule. It is named after Arturo Campus, an electrical engineer who was crucial in bringing the Apollo 13 mission safely back to Earth.

Moonkin will give NASA scientists important information on what potential human crew members may go through during flight during the voyage. NASA's Artemis program's unmanned test trip to the moon, Artemis 1, is the agency's maiden launch test of the Space Launch System megarocket. NASA will use the information from Moonikin to train the astronauts who will fly around the moon on the Artemis 2 mission in 2024 and those who will land on the moon on Artemis 3.

NASA's Exploration Ground Systems stated that "He will monitor vibrations and accelerations that future NASA Artemis astronauts will experience" (opens in new tab).

Two sensors that are mounted behind the commander's seat and beneath the headrest will monitor the acceleration and vibration produced throughout the lunar mission and record these crucial measurements. Two radiation sensors are also included in Campo to track exposure.

Campos is dressed in the newest flight wear trend, the First-Generation Orion Crew Survival System spacesuit, in addition to essential sensory gear. astronauts will continue to wear this orange pressure suit for all upcoming launches and re-entries.

Campos will not be traveling alone on the Artemis 1 mission; Helga and Zohar, two more mannequin "passengers," will be mounted to Orion in the upcoming weeks. The Matroshka AstroRad Radiation Experiment (MARE), which will document radiation levels throughout the voyage to the moon, includes these two limbless phantom mannequins.

The Artemis 1 mission, which is scheduled to launch on August 29, will send the three mannequins beyond Earth's atmosphere and toward the moon.
