Newly documented polar bear population lives in a surprising place

Southeast Greenland is home to a polar bear population that is isolated and genetically different. Researchers that saw and monitored the bears found that they rely on the freshwater ice provided by the Greenland ice sheet to live despite having little access to sea ice, which is essential for polar bears. The journal Science released a report on the bears on Thursday. "We never expected to find a new subpopulation living there," said lead study author Kristin Laidre, a polar research scientist at the University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory, in a statement. "We wanted to survey this region because we didn't know much about the polar bears in Southeast Greenland. "Because of historical documents and Indigenous knowledge, we were aware that there were some bears in the region. We just were unaware of their uniqueness." Woodpeckers' heads act more like stiff hammers than safety helmets

How woodpeckers can continuously strike tree trunks with their beaks without harming their brains has long been a mystery to scientists. Because of this, it was assumed that their skulls must function as shock-absorbing helmets. Researchers have already debunked this idea, claiming that their heads behave more like stiff hammers and published their findings in the journal Current Biology on July 14. Their calculations really reveal that any stress absorption would interfere with the woodpeckers' ability to peck. Sam Van Wassenbergh from the Universiteit Antwerpen in Belgium states, "We discovered that woodpeckers do not absorb the shock of the hit with the tree by studying high-speed footage of three species of woodpeckers. It is well known that giant pandas are picky eaters. They solely eat bamboo, and each day they may consume up to 99 pounds (45 kilograms) of it in 15 hours. Though it was believed that the present pandas' specialized diet originated relatively recently, their forebears, like the majority of bears, consumed a far wider diet that included meat. According to a recent research, pandas may have developed a special fondness for bamboo at least 6 million years ago, probably as a result of the plant's extensive distribution and year-round availability. Modern pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) have an unusual sixth finger, a type of thumb that enables them to readily grab bamboo stalks and peel the leaves, allowing them to thrive primarily on low-nutrient bamboo. Small plesiosaur fossils, long-necked marine reptiles from the dinosaur era, were discovered in the Sahara Desert of Morocco, a 100 million year old river system. This finding shows that some plesiosaur species, which were previously believed to be marine creatures, may have really resided in freshwater. Plesiosaurs were ancient reptiles with small heads, long necks, and four long flippers. Mary Anning, a fossil researcher, discovered them for the first time in 1823. Plesiosaurs were sea animals, or were popularly believed to be, unlike the Loch Ness Monster, which is what inspired reconstructions of it. According to calculations done by a climate scientist at Tohoku University in Japan, the current mass extinction event is not expected to be as devastating as the previous five. Certainly not for several more centuries. Earth has lost the majority of its species on several occasions during the past 540 million years in a very small geologic time period. These are referred to as major extinction events, and they frequently occur just after a climatic shift occurs, whether it results from extremely high or extremely low temperatures brought on by asteroids or volcanic activity, respectively.
